Equine-Assisted Services

Experience healing and growth through horse-assisted services.

At Yellow Thunder Horse Ranch, we offer equine-assisted learning and services designed to foster personal and professional growth. Our workshops and counselling services cater to individuals, families, and groups seeking meaningful connection with horses.

The ranch was established in 2020 and named after the owner's late grandson Osawastim Piyisiw, which means Yellow Thunder Horse in Cree. To honour him, the ranch was founded and offers learning and healing through the spirit of the horse.

The heart of the human-horse relationship lies in a deep and meaningful bond. Horses, being naturally social and empathetic creatures, are adept at interpreting human emotions through cues such as body language, heart rate, and vocal tone. They reflect our feelings, matching calmness with calmness and reacting to anxiety with caution. Horses respond to your genuine internal state rather than any façade you put on. Through interacting with them, you will learn effective communication, mutual respect, and forge a true connection. This journey encourages you to be mindful and centered gradually making emotional regulation an effortless part of your life.

Other Testimonials
"When my partner and I first came to equine therapy, we didn’t know exactly what to expect. We had tried traditional counseling before, but somehow we kept falling into the same patterns of communication and misunderstanding. The idea of working with horses felt different—less about talking at each other, and more about learning to connect in a new way. From the very first session, we were surprised by how intuitive the horses were. They seemed to pick up on our energy, our tension, even the things we didn’t say. When one of us was anxious or frustrated, the horse would respond—sometimes by backing away, sometimes by standing still until we both calmed down. It was humbling, but also incredibly healing. Through guided exercises, we learned to approach the horses (and each other) with patience, clarity, and calm. When we worked together to lead or groom a horse, we had to cooperate without competing, listen without interrupting, and trust without control. Those same lessons started to show up in our relationship at home. Equine therapy gave us a space to grow emotionally without judgment—to be fully present, to let go of defensiveness, and to rebuild our connection through empathy and teamwork. The horses didn’t care about our arguments or our history; they simply reflected back the energy we brought into the moment. That reflection helped us become more honest with ourselves and more compassionate toward each other. Today, our relationship feels stronger, more grounded, and more peaceful. We still have challenges, but we handle them with greater awareness and respect. Equine therapy didn’t just help us communicate better—it helped us understand each other in a way we never had before. I’m deeply grateful for the experience and would recommend it to any couple/individual looking to reconnect—not just with each other, but with themselves. Chooch and her team were amazing! I would highly recommend Yellow Thunder Horse Ranch."

The horses in our program are evaluated and schooled. We make every effort to ensure that everyone feels safe and respected. Sessions may be customized to ensure your comfort level. You may find that as the session(s) progress that you will feel comfortable around the horse(s) and overcome your fear to the point that you will be able to touch them. Previous horse experience is not required, and there is no riding involved.

We are certain you will benefit! In your experience with horses, you are already familiar with their behavior and the feedback they offer you when you work with them. The experience may help you to understand horses on a deeper level and help you with your personal and professional development.

There is no riding of the horses involved in Equine-Assisted Learning (EAL) programming. It is handling and leading the horses through a set of obstacle courses to learn certain objectives.
However, riding lessons can be arranged. Contact the Ranch for more information.

Appropriate clothing is recommended for the weather. Open toed and crocs are not allowed. If you have inappropriate footwear, we have boots that you may borrow for the session. Helmets are required to be worn if under the age of 18.
In the winter months, we have lessons in an indoor arena, but you still have to dress for the weather.

All lessons and sessions take place on the ground with a certified equine-assisted learning facilitator, assistant, and horses or ponies. The sessions can be customized to the specific needs of the individual participant or the group or organization. Sessions are with the horses that include exercises with halters, lead ropes, tethering, and equipment such as poles, pylons, hoola hoops, tarps, and other obstacles that you and the horses navigate through and over, subject to the objective of the exercise. The work with the horses and the individual or group involves body, emotion, and mindfulness through reflective sessions, journaling, body scans, and grounding. There is no riding the horses. We encourage the participants to take a spiritual walk with the horse.

It is a proven Equine Assisted Learning Curriculum of objective-based exercises. The Cartier partnership spent 10 years researching the lasting benefits of EAL and hundreds of hours developing a user-friendly, flexible, teachable curriculum that others could learn and implement at a facility of their own. Each exercise builds on the skills of the last and is carefully designed to deliver on specific learning objectives through interactive group engagement with horses.
Is there research to validate this program?
There have been 2 independent studies conducted to validate the effectiveness of the Building Block Program™. The first was done with Cartier Equine Centre Partnership in 2013 with the Universities of Regina, Saskatchewan and Calgary. Cartier Farms EAL Centre has continued to pursue 3rd party validation to inform program improvements and development. A more recent study in 2016 by McMaster and the Universities of Regina and Saskatchewan showed that EAL outcomes supported the 4 stated objectives including building relationships, learning about self, positive self-concept and client life skill development.

Cartier Farms EAL Centre is in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and is owned and run by Gayle Cartier, Daryl Cartier with Janice Boucher and Roger Boucher. Formerly known as the Cartier Equine Centre, these are 4 of the original CEC partners and the founders of the Building Block Curriculum. Gayle & Janice are the true masters of EAL and have been running programs since 2000. They created the Building Block Program™ with the CEC partnership to help others learn how to run this valuable program and bring it to their own community.
